How did the Tang Dynasty shape China?

The Tang Dynasty is widely considered the golden age of Chinese civilization, and its influence on China and East Asia was so pervasive that Chinese communities abroad are still sometimes called 'Tang people' (Tangren). The dynasty shaped China in virtually every dimension of culture, politics, and society.

Politically, the Tang refined the civil service examination system into the primary mechanism for selecting government officials. While examinations had existed earlier, the Tang made them the dominant path to political power, testing candidates on Confucian classics, poetry, and policy questions. This created a governing class selected by intellectual merit rather than aristocratic birth — a revolutionary concept that would endure for over a millennium and profoundly shape Chinese political culture.

Culturally, the Tang era produced China's greatest literary achievements. Tang poetry — the works of Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, and hundreds of others — is still memorized by Chinese schoolchildren and is considered the pinnacle of Chinese literary art. Tang artistic styles in painting, ceramics, and sculpture set standards that influenced all subsequent Chinese art.

The Tang were remarkably cosmopolitan. Chang'an, with perhaps a million inhabitants, was the world's largest and most diverse city, hosting communities from across Eurasia. This openness to foreign influence enriched Chinese culture immensely — but also generated periodic backlash, most notably the suppression of Buddhism and other foreign religions in 845.

Beyond China, Tang influence reshaped East Asia. Japan, Korea, and Vietnam all modeled their governments, writing systems, urban planning, and cultural practices on Tang originals. The Tang created a shared East Asian cultural sphere that persists, in modified form, to this day.
