The Digital Revolution is the shift from mechanical and analog technology to digital electronics, beginning in the late 20th century. It encompasses the development of personal computers, the internet, smartphones, and artificial intelligence — transforming how humans communicate, work, learn, shop, and govern themselves in ways as profound as the Industrial Revolution transformed the 19th century.

The Digital Revolution is arguably the most transformative technological shift since the Industrial Revolution — a transition from analog to digital technology that has reshaped virtually every aspect of human life in barely two generations.

The foundations were laid in the mid-20th century. The invention of the transistor (1947) and the integrated circuit (1958) made it possible to miniaturize electronic components. Surveillance capabilities have expanded dramatically, raising questions about privacy and state power. Misinformation spreads at digital speed. The revolution has delivered extraordinary benefits — access to information, connection across distance, new forms of creativity — while also creating challenges that existing institutions and norms are struggling to address.
